Gerry Duggan and Dustin Weaver do a great job of establishing this family and their dynamics. Without the baggage of pre-existing heroes and concepts to slow them down, the storytellers make us feel immediately for Anwen’s hardships. Anwen is a teenage girl whose mother left the family behind to try to and prevent the bug invasion from ever happening. It was a selfless move to make, but one that apparently failed, and that makes those left behind powerless against the bugs.

Anwen is a terrific young character who will hopefully get to stay around long past Secret Wars. Her plight is immediately recognizable and sympathetic (even if it does involve giant space bugs), and her attitude is at once endearing and heartbreaking. While her little sister doesn’t get as much to do in this opening chapter, her father and grandfather are also fully-formed human beings. Their relationship and history is made clear through organic-sounding dialogue and arguments. This is a family that you want to root for even as you’re seeing them fall apart. In all I would rate this issue an 8/10 that’s all for this issue and as always keep on marveling.
